Dark under eyes – how can they be treated?

At Aestheticlinix, we understand the frustration dark under eye circles can cause.

Not only do dark under eye circles detract from an otherwise attractive face, they can also be associated with tiredness and ageing. Our eyes can show signs of premature ageing, by the appearance of under eye hollowing and shadowing, causing a tired appearance which revolves around many of the conversations we have in our clinic regarding under eyes.

We provide a variety of in (and out) house treatments to help improve dark under eye circles here at Aestheticlinix, but firstly, we are going to talk about a few lifestyle changes that can help improve your dark under eyes, as surprising to most patients, a lot of studies continuously point back to lifestyle, food and general health choices as a large factor of darkness under the eyes.

The common contributing factor, dehydration.

Drinking plenty of water will help keep your skin – and dark circles – hydrated. Inadequate sleep is another major cause: getting 7-8 hours of restful sleep per night will help you look more refreshed and less puffy in the morning. Additionally, allergies, stress, lack of vitamin K or poor circulation may all contribute to dark under eye circles.

We highly recommend medical grade skincare that we can prescribe in our clinic (the out of house treatments we suggested above) that contain specific formulas that are not only targeted to combat dark circles, there is substantial evidence, research and data to prove it works! Something over the counter under eye products are unable to achieve due to medical grade skincare having higher percentage and potency within its ingredients.

Finally, a cheap and simple solution … SPF. Its imperative patients wear sunscreen (no matter the weather, come rain or shine) in order to protect from UVA/UVB rays that can age your skin prematurely and darken dark under eye circles further. If you aren’t protecting your skin at its current rate, then the pigmentation has opportunity to develop further, undoing all the hard work.

Applying a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ on all exposed areas of your face will help prevent any sun damage related to dark circles under the eyes, but also hyperpigmentation.

By making these lifestyle tweaks and incorporating effective medical grade skincare into your routine, you’ll be well on your way to improving the appearance of dark under eye circles.

However, if you need extra help we offer a range of treatments to address dark under eye circles including:

Dermal Fillers (Tear trough filler)

A very fine, FDA approved and CE marked dermal filler by a leading premium dermal filler supplier can be injected beneath the eye tissue to lift the skin, creating a smoother look by eliminating shadows that contribute to dark circles.

Side note – It is imperative to note that dermal filler is a combination treatment under the eyes and as a stand-alone treatment will not correct under eye issues.

Reducing the shadowing created by the hollows is able to help give our patients a more refreshed and youthful under eye appearance.

Medical Micro-needling

This procedure involves a body response called “collagen induction therapy”. A small pen-like device with needles is delivered to the skin to “damage” it. This in turn will create a reactive response from the body to help heal the “damage” and trauma. The body’s way of responding will be to target the area with hyaluronic acid, collagen and elastin – a beautiful cocktail of ingredients needed to help hydrate, brighten and plump the under eye area.

Mesotherapy

This treatment injects a product called ARC (anti radical complex) under the eyes. Essentially a combination of vitamins, minerals and amino acids directly into dark circles around the under eye to stimulate collagen production and improve skin tone.
